Russia condemns US and UK for Yemen attacks and warns of ‘chaos’
Russia condemned the United States and Britain on Friday for military strikes in Yemen, which Moscow said were a reckless venture that risked sowing chaos across the Middle East.
The United States and Britain launched air and sea strikes against Houthi military targets in Yemen in response to attacks by the Iranian-backed movement on ships in the Red Sea, a dramatic regional widening of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
But Russia, an ally of Iran and a partner of major Arab powers, called an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday to discuss the issue.
“We vehemently condemn these irresponsible actions by the United States and its allies,” said Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to journalists.
“A large-scale military escalation in the Red Sea region could cancel out the positive trends that have recently emerged in the Yemen colonization process, as well as provoke a destabilization of the situation across the Middle East.”
Russia, which has been criticized by the West for what it says is an illegal war in Ukraine, said the attack on Yemen occurred without any UN mandate and was therefore an illegal “adventure” by the United States and its allies.
Russia said it shared concerns by Saudi Arabia and other regional countries about the attacks. Riyadh called for moderation and “avoiding escalation” after the attacks and said it was monitoring the situation with great concern.
“We share the concerns expressed by our regional partners, particularly Saudi Arabia,” Zakharova said.
Iran also condemned the US-led attacks as illegal and escalating.
The United States said Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands supported the operation and sought to portray the attacks as part of an international effort to restore the free flow of trade on a key route between Europe and Asia, which accounts for about 15% of world shipping traffic.
A spokesman for Yemen’s Houthis said there was no justification for the US-UK attack and said the group will continue to attack ships heading for Israel.
