Many voters who supported Boris Johnson’s conservatives in 2019 will support the Reform UK in the next elections, rather than the Labour Party, a new survey suggested.
In what will be a bleak reading for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, only 55 percent of those who voted blue last time will do so when the country goes to the polls next year. Of the 45 percent of voters that the Conservatives will lose, 15 percent will vote for Richard Tice’s insurgent party.
The Reform, formerly known as the Brexit Party, is to the right of the Government, notably on migration and net zero emissions. Despite having a 20 point lead over Rishi Sunak, Sir Keir Starmer’s party won’t have as many conservative voters as Richard Tice.
However, the 13 percent of conservative supporters that the Labour Party is expected to secure will contribute greatly to putting the leader of the opposition in Downing Street, according to recent polls. Redfield and Wilton data also revealed that the Liberal Democrats would secure four percent of government votes in 2019.
Reform UK is currently the third largest party by ten points, according to BMG data. Richard Tice’s electoral strategy is ambitious; Reform is planning to field a candidate in every electoral district and warning that the Conservatives must be “punished” at the polls.
Backing the findings of Redfield and Wilton’s surveys, a separate poll conducted by JL Partners on Monday found that 15 percent of 2019 conservative supporters will switch to the Reform.
In a clever move on the Government’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, Mr. Tice’s party pledges to achieve net zero immigration emissions, meaning that the number of arrivals in the UK cannot exceed the number leaving.
Last month, Tice stated that he had “numerous discussions” with conservative MPs who are upset that the government failed to stop the boats.
He told Laura Kuenssberg on the BBC: “I am very happy to confirm that I have had numerous discussions with several Conservative MPs, ministers, former ministers, who are absolutely furious at the government’s complete betrayal of promises, furious at the failure to stop the boats, furious at the opening of the borders to mass immigration.”
