Detectar detritos durante corridas de F1 through the safety car could increase safety and make race management work easier again during safety periods.
Mercedes will evaluate the use of a laser detection system on the safety car to detect debris on the track. It often happens that drivers complain that debris was not completely removed by marshals. New equipment from automotive technology company Luminar may solve the problem.
The so-called LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scanner will be used, mounted on the safety car and will be evaluated during the 2024 season. Luminar claims that its product can detect debris within a range of up to 250 meters and larger objects within a range of up to 500 meters.
“I am pleased to announce this new partnership with Luminar,” said Toto Wolff of Mercedes. “I am impressed with what they are showing now, with their technology and the work they are investing in it.”
“I am convinced that this will have far-reaching consequences for the automotive industry in general, we can all benefit from this in the future to be safer on the road. I am very curious to see what all this can bring.”
