A CNN cancelled its planned Republican primary debate in New Hampshire after Donald Trump and Nikki Haley refused to attend.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was the only one willing to commit to the Sunday debate at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, which was scheduled two days before the country’s first primary on January 23rd.
“CNN is no longer moving forward with a Republican presidential debate in New Hampshire as only one qualified candidate has accepted the CNN invitation to take the stage,” a network spokesperson told The Post in a statement.
“We will continue to pursue other opportunities as the campaign season advances toward 2024, including town hall candidates this week with Governor Ron DeSantis and Amb. Nikki Haley, from New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire.”
DeSantis and Haley had already faced off at a CNN forum in Des Moines, Iowa on January 10th, while Trump continued his policy of skipping all Republican Party debates thus far in this cycle.
On Tuesday, after finishing third in the Iowa caucus, Haley announced that she would no longer participate in debates unless Trump or President Biden were also involved.
“We’ve had five great debates in the campaign,” Haley said at the time. “Unfortunately, Donald Trump avoided all of them. He has nowhere left to hide. The next debate I’ll have will be with Donald Trump or with Joe Biden. I’m looking forward to it.”
On Tuesday night, ABC News announced that it was canceling the debate scheduled for Thursday, also set to take place at St. Anselm College, in response to Haley’s ultimatum.
DeSantis, Haley, and Trump were all eligible to participate in the debates by virtue of having finished in the top three in the Iowa caucus.
CNN held its town hall meeting with DeSantis on Tuesday night, with the Haley event scheduled for Thursday.
