Brother, can you spare $355 million?
As Donald Trump’s world struggles to find a way to pay an enormous civil fraud settlement, his supporters have turned to online fundraising in an attempt to contribute.
“The recent legal battles he faces are not just an attack on him, but an attack on the very ideals of justice and due process that every American deserves,” said a GoFundMe effort launched on Friday to raise the nine-figure sum Trump owes. “It is a moment that questions the balance of justice and law enforcement, with the disproportionate goal of silencing a voice that has been at the forefront of defending American strength, prosperity, and security.”
“This is more than a legal fund; it is a call to all patriots to unite in defense of a man who has never hesitated to defend us,” the appeal continued. “Therefore, this fundraising is not just about raising the ‘determined’ amount. It’s about taking a stand.”
The GoFundMe – which had raised more than $66,000 by Saturday afternoon – was started by Elena Cardone, a woman from Florida who described herself as a “mother and a fervent advocate of American values.”
Cardone is married to Grant Cardone, a private equity fund manager.
The largest individual donation so far was $2,500 from an anonymous supporter.
Some donors accessed the comments section to leave enthusiastic messages of support for the former president.
“I believe President Trump deserves the support of his followers… And I can’t wait until he is our president again… With love, hi,” said Christine Muro, who donated $20.
It is not the first time Trump’s supporters have turned to crowdfunding on behalf of the billionaire.
A 2019 GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Trump’s border wall raised $25 million – before its creators were charged with conspiracy to commit electronic fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
